Basic concepts of scalars and vectors, Newton’s laws, units, problem-solving in statics. Force Systems: Force, rectangular components, moment, couple, resultants, force systems in 3-D. Equilibrium: System isolation and the free-body diagram, equilibrium conditions in 2-D and 3-D. Structures: Plane trusses, method of joints, method of sections, space trusses, frames and machines. Distributed Forces: Center of mass, centroids of lines, areas, and volumes, composite bodies and figures. Beams: External effects, internal effects, flexible cables. Friction: Introduction, types of friction, dry friction, wedges. Virtual Work: Introduction, work, equilibrium.
