Analysis and design of optical communication systems. Free-space, fiber-optic and turbulent atmospheric channels; modal representation of fields, Coherent and incoherent sources; modulation methods. Modelling and statistical analysis of photodetectors; thermal and shot noise, Direct and heterodyne detection; analog and digital transmission; signal-to-noise ratios; advanced applications.

Hours: XYZ where X = Lecture, Y = Lab, Z = Credit
All hours are per week.
3 Lab hours constitute 1 credit hour
