GIK Institute represents Pakistan in Unilever Future Leaders League in Singapore

A team comprising of Maher Jiwani, Khuzema Sunel, Areej Fatima and Humbal bin Usman represented Pakistan in the Unilever Future Leaders League (UFLL). The program held in Singapore is an opportunity to develop leadership and management skills in areas such as Customer Management (Sales), Supply Chain Management and Marketing. One team is selected through a country wide competition to represent it in this global training. Unilever Pakistan organized the Lipton Talent Hunt to shortlist a team which would ultimately go on to represent Pakistan in the Unilever Future Leaders League. Teams from prominent universities were invited to register and assigned to carry out a certain set of activities related to the brand image within their campus. The challenge this year was to generate ideas for a digital platform that will enable Lipton to bring about a positive change in the society. This was complimented by a 360 degree campaign that generated content and highlights Lipton’s brand purpose. Out of the three teams from GIKI which cleared the initial round, Team Screw the Nail made it into the final round. “Our idea was a singing platform known by the Lipton Jam Room”, says Areej Fatima, “We made a video of students singing for a cup of Lipton Tea and uploaded it on our Facebook page.  The page captured a huge hype. Later we were called for a presentation in Karachi along with three other teams. This was to be the concluding round of the Lipton Talent Hunt. Keeping our fingers crossed we waited for the results to be announced and to our delight we were declared winners.” Talking about their experience, Khuzema Sunel mentions the support they had from the students of GIKI, the hard work put in by the team and the joy of winning. “We all are elated beyond description. Apart from winning the competition which of course is a big achievement in itself, we developed a great set of marketing skills. It was an exciting lifetime experience that did and will help me. I thank fellow GIKIans from the bottom of my heart who turned up in such huge numbers to support our efforts.”   ...

Team HammerHead Arc clinches sixth place in Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2014

Team HammerHead Arc clinches sixth place in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014Team HammerHead Arc, sponsored by Toyota, represented GIK Institute in the Prototype Battery Electric Category of the competition which took place in Manila, Philippines, from February 6 to 9, 2014.   Shell Eco-Marathon is the international stage where student teams from around the globe compete with their ultra energy-efficient vehicles. Organized in America, Europe and Asia, the event hosts one of the most appreciated gatherings of young engineers who are all aspired to push the frontiers of fuel efficiency.   Led by Ahmed Zia and advised by Prof. Dr. Javed Ahmad Chattha, Team HammerHead Arc consisted of a number of inter-disciplinary students including Sherjeel Sikandar, Zain Rehman, Muhammad Salman Khalid, Ahmed Iqbal Memon, Muhammad Zohair Iqbal, Omama Tahir, Suleman B. Kazi and Hira Shaukat.   “Even the sixth rank was an achievement”, says Ahmed Iqbal, “Usually the teams from Pakistan aim to be on the scoreboard only. Of course we went for that too but when we came to know that we can do better, we gave it our best.”   Ahmed Zia particularly mentioned the healthy competitive environment, the efforts put in by the entire team and some memories of the two weeks spent in Philippines. “We took a lot of memorable photos there”, he says, “We arranged a stall bearing all those photographs and it was announced there for all the participants to come and see what Pakistani team had on display. No other team had done that and we felt proud representing our culture. Even our fellow competitors from India came to watch. We became good friends with teams from Lebanon, Qatar and Philippines. But the best part was to see GIKI, Pakistan on the scoreboard.”   Ahmed Iqbal also mentions that the greatest strength the team bears is their determination and the idea of never giving up. “There were many situations in the past few months when anyone would have given up”, he added, “but we kept going on and by the Grace of Almighty Allah, the team made it this far.”   Team achieved an efficiency of 205.6 km/kWh, falling short of first position by only 58 km/kWh. The success can be attributed to the improvements in terms of body weight, internal friction and aerodynamics. With current success, Team HammerHead is looking forward to taking things to a higher mark. For more information about Team HammerHead Arc: Click here ...
