RESEARCH PROJECTS
  • Spatiotemporal evolution and failure criterion of physical and mechanical parameters of root-soil composite.

This project was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 42172320)). Climate change and its adverse effects are becoming a greater global challenge. One of the adverse effects of these climate change is an increase in extreme weather events’ frequency and intensity. As the consequences of this increase in extreme events result in an increasing number of mountain hazards. To mitigate soil erosion, soil reinforcement with living plant roots is a sustainable bio-engineering alternative for stabilization of critical slopes instead of mechanical reinforcement, i.e., retaining walls, soil nailing, etc.

In order to investigate the effectiveness of roots as a slope stabilizing agent and to propose a constitutive model for the design of bio-engineered slope, the scope of this project was to study the distribution of roots architectural indices, roots mechanical properties, the effect of roots on the constitutive behavior of soil and proposing a predictive constitutive model for soil-root composite.

  • Research on granular flow hazards mitigation

This project was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 41761144077)) to study the mechanism of dry granular flow and the effect of dry granular flow on a flexible barrier. Typical flume experiments and numerical simulations were used to accomplish the objective of this research.
