The 3rd International Workshop on Functional Reverse Engineering of Machine Tools (WRE 2021) was organized at GIK Institute on 11 December, 2021. The workshop was technically co-sponsored by IEEE and IMechE and financially sponsored by Directorate General of Science and Technology, Government of KP. Proceedings of the workshop will be published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis Group, USA) as “Computers in Engineering Design and Manufacturing” book series.

The crux of the opinion in the three days ‘International Workshop on Functional Reverse Engineering Machine Tools’ in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology was that the application of functional reverse engineering has gained a considerable momentum while ensuring the safety and well-being of the users of different products.

Rector, GIK Institute, Professor Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, was the Chief Guest at the opening ceremony, and Prof. Dr. Tahir Irfan Khan, Vice Chancellor, Abbottabad University of Science and Technology was the Chief Guest at the Closing Ceremony.

The academic experts from across the world and Pakistan spoke in the workshop and their participation became possible due to rigorous efforts of Prof. Dr. Wasim A. Khan, Pro-Rector, academics. He was general chair of the workshop. A large number of national and international scientists, invited speakers and practitioners attended the workshop. There were four keynote talks and four parallel technical sessions including six invited talks and twelve chapter presentations. Among the prominent speakers at workshop were:

  • Prof. Dr. Duc Pham OBE, University of Birmingham, UK,
  • Dr. Volkan Esat, Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus, Turkey
  • Dr. Khurram Altaf, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia
  • Mr. Gul Waqar Khan, Nokia, Finland
  • Prof Xiaoping Wang, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China
  • Dr. Lubna Luxmi Dhirani, University of Limerick, Ireland
  • Dr. Lemopi Isidore Besong; Brandenburg University of Technology, Germany
  • Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abid, Director, COMSATS University, Pakistan.
  • Dr. Ahmar Rashid, Dean FCSE, GIK Institute, Pakistan.

Addressing on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid said that the workshop was a golden opportunity for the academic experts from across the world and Pakistan to exchange views with each views with each other and adopt new measures for quality enhancing and finding faults in different products in the best interest of the people and future generation.

The experts said that the purpose of functional reverse engineering is to improve the existing products and machines, studying more closely the efficiency, design and manufacturing.

Prof. Dr. Wasim A. Khan spoke in detail about the functional reverse engineering process and its importance for the society. “Quality is the most important aspect of functional reverse engineering,” he said.

Both the Chief Guests congratulated the untiring efforts of the Workshop General Chair, Professor Dr. Wasim A. Khan and his team, including Dr. Ghulam Abbas, Dr. Khalid Rehman and Dr. Ghulam Hussain, on successful conduction of the International Workshop.
